Interim Opera & Maker City
The competition win by a+r Architekten for the Interim Opera Stuttgart, in collaboration with NL Architects, was a topic of discussion within our office last summer. Subsequently, a media release was published on the subject. The concept was presented to a wider public at the aed event last Thursday. It proved to be an enlightening and informative evening.
In mid-summer temperatures, a+r Architects invited guests to the courtyard and their offices on the former Waldbaur site and gave an intensive and entertaining report on the highly complex project. Many thanks to Alexander Lange and Florian Gruner, both managing directors, and Hellmut Schiefer, chief architect at a+r Architekten!
Among other things, the idea of an entire village in timber construction on the interim site was new to many in the audience. The combination of art and life, or urban living with village character, has great charm and is one of the many fascinating aspects of this project.
The temporary building, which will be constructed in the immediate vicinity of the Wagenhallen in the north of Stuttgart, will allow the Stuttgart State Opera and Stuttgart Ballet to perform during the ten to twelve year renovation of the historic Littmann building. It will also provide space for production, rehearsal, storage, technical services and parts of the Württembergische Staatstheater's (WST) administration. Once the renovation is complete and the opera and ballet have moved back to the Oberer Schlossgarten, most of the building complex will continue to be used for Maker City. The project is part of the International Building Exhibition IBA'27.
